ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team closed out the non-conference schedule with a thrilling 92-85 victory in overtime at Crown College Thursday night in the Wild Athletic Center. The win gives the Scots a 3-2 record on the season, while the Storm falls to 1-4.
Macalester started well, outscoring Crown 14-3 over the first four minutes of the game. Junior forward
Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) hit two three-pointers and scored eight points in the run. A conventional three-point play by junior guard
Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado) made the score 23-11 Scots with 9:31 left in the half. Macalester pushed the lead to 31-15 before the Storm closed the half on a 12-3 run to trail, 34-27 at the break. Henningfield scored 13 points and Ramos had 11 in the first half, as the Scots held Crown to 26.7 percent shooting from the field.
Momentum stayed with the Storm early in the second half, as the hosts began the half with an 8-2 run to pull to within one, 36-35. Macalester was able to increase its lead to 47-38, thanks in part to a three from sophomore guard
Eric Sathy (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead). After Crown reduced the deficit to five, the Scots reeled off 14-2 spree, including seven points apiece from Sathy and Henningfield, to lead 65-48 with 10:50 remaining.
The Storm wasn't finished yet, scoring the next seven points to spark a 20-5 run and cut Macalester's lead to two, 70-68 with 2:29 to play. After junior guard
Tyler McFarland (Denver, Colo/New Hampton School) hit two free throws, a three-pointer from Sawyer Lawhon and a basket by Gunnar Ledin gave Crown a 73-72 lead with 1:23 left. Henningfield answered with a three of his own, but Ledin was fouled and made both free throws to tie the score at 75-75 with 51 seconds on the clock. Macalester had two possessions before the end of regulation, but the Scots were unable to score the go-ahead basket, and the game headed to overtime.
Macalester took the lead 26 seconds into the extra session on a three from Henningfield and never looked back. Baskets by Ramos and sophomore center
Shane Anderson (Fargo, N.D./Davies), plus a three-pointer from Sathy, helped to build an 87-83 edge with 2:12 left in overtime. Torry Ledin's layup brought the Storm to within two, but the Scots made their free throws down the stretch to close out the victory.
Henningfield finished with a career-high 35 points on 13-of-21 shooting from the field. He also made four three-pointers and grabbed 11 rebounds. Sathy also posted a career best with 21 points, making 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. Not to be left out, Ramos topped his collegiate best with 18 points to go with seven rebounds and seven assists. Anderson tallied his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 boards. He also added four assists and three steals.
Macalester shot a season-high 50.0 percent from the field, including 9-of-23 (39.1 percent) from three-point range. Gunnar Ledin led Crown with 39 points.
