Women’s Soccer: Macalester Falls to #19 St. Thomas 1-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Macalester women's soccer team fell to #19 St. Thomas on Saturday evening, holding the Tommies to only one goal. The Scots move to 2-12-1 on the year and are 2-6-1 in the MIAC, whereas St. Thomas improves to 12-2-2 and 7-1-1 in conference play.

With the loss, Macalester is now 9-6-6 in their all-time series history with the Tommies. This game marked the ninth time this season that a contest was decided by one goal for the Scots.

St. Thomas put a lot of offensive pressure on Macalester all game, firing 25 shots on the night while holding the Scots to just three shots. Ten of the Tommies' 25 shots were on goal, as Macalester goalkeeper Kate Lawhead (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie) saved nine of them. This was Lawhead's seventh game this season making six or more saves. With the loss, the junior moves to 2-5-0 on the year.

The Tommies scored late into the first half, as Kristen Epperly took a pass in the box from teammate Kaley Roberts and found the back right of the net to give her team a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. Alice Bieda (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) and Julia Kispert (Atherton, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) each had a shot for the Scots in the half.

In the second half, offense was hard to come by for Macalester, with Bieda firing the team's only shot of the half in the 57th minute.

The Scots' defense held tough against the nationally-ranked Tommies in the second half, not allowing their 13 shots and seven corner kicks to lead to a goal. However, the St. Thomas defense also took care of business to help their team to the 1-0 win.

Macalester finishes up their three-game homestand on Wednesday when they will host Saint Mary's for a 7:30 p.m. game at Macalester Stadium. The team will then close out the season at Gustavus on November 2 at 3:30 p.m.
