ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Macalester women's soccer team dropped their final home match of the season on Wednesday night, falling to Saint Mary's 2-0 at Macalester Stadium. The game was scoreless after the first half of play, but the Cardinals found a way to score twice in the second half to claim the victory.
This was the first time that the Scots have lost to Saint Mary's, as Macalester is now 5-1 in their all-time series with the Cardinals. With the win, Saint Mary's makes it four straight wins and improves to 10-6-1 on the year with a 3-6-1 record in the MIAC. The Scots are now 2-13-1 overall and 2-7-1 in league play.
The first half featured back-and-forth play, with the Scots holding a slight edge in possession time (55%), but the Cardinals held a 5-4 advantage in shots. One of Macalester's best chances in the half came from sophomore
Alice Bieda (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) when she got an open look in the box in the 32
nd minute, but her shot missed just wide. The game remained 0-0 heading into the break.
The Cardinals increased their offense intensity in the second half, outshooting the Scots 12-5 in the frame. Saint Mary's Nicole Thompson opened the scoring for the Cardinals in the 59
th minute taking advantage of a scramble in the box to make it 1-0.
Less than five minutes later the Cardinals added to their lead as Thompson launched a pass to teammate Kassie Arriage who finished the play to give Saint Mary's an insurance goal.
Bieda finished with three shots for Macalester and juniors
Georgia Kazemi (Missoula, Mont./Hellgate) and
Kate Bond (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) chipped in with two each. First year
Abby Ecker (Portland, Ore./St. Mary's Academy) also had a good chance in the game, getting open on the left side of the field, but the Saint Mary's keeper came out to knock down her shot before it could do any damage.
