ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Macalester women's soccer team celebrated senior day in style on Saturday night with a 2-1 overtime win over Concordia Moorhead. With the win, the Scots are now 2-9-1 on the year and 2-4-1 in the MIAC. The Cobbers move to 8-5 overall with a 1-5 conference record.
Before tonight's game, Macalester took a moment to honor their two seniors,
Molly Adams and
Elizabeth Han. The senior duo have been major contributors to the women's soccer program throughout their time at Mac, both being named to the All-MIAC Honorable Mention team in 2018.
The Scots are now 2-3-2 in their all-time series history with Concordia, earning their first win against the Cobbers since the 2015 season.
It was the Cobbers who struck first in the game, but Macalester answered with a goal in the second half to send it to overtime. Less than a minute into the first overtime frame, sophomore
Carolyn Eckstein (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) took a long pass from teammate
Kate Bond (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) and beat the goalie to win it. This was Eckstein's first goal of the season and Bond's first assist.
The first half belonged to the Cobbers, as they did not allow the Scots to take a shot throughout the first 45 minutes. The Macalester defense held strong for the majority of the half, defending eight shots and four corner kicks, but Concordia's fifth corner kick was successful. Karsen Granning got to the ball first, putting a shot on net that was saved, but Samantha Holmberg was there to get the rebound and put it in to give the Cobbers a 1-0 lead.
In the second half the Scots were able to get more offense going, taking three shots with all three of them being on net. Macalester took advantage of a free kick in the 63
rd minute, as Bond put a shot on net. This shot was saved, but first year
Abby Ecker (Portland, Ore./St. Mary's Academy) was there to get the ricochet and put it away to tie the game at one goal apiece. This was Ecker's second goal of her rookie season.
Neither team was able to score the rest of the half and the game headed to overtime. The Scots did not need long, however, as Eckstein scored only 29 seconds into the period to give Macalester the 2-1 decision.
Junior
Kate Lawhead (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie) made six saves in net to earn the win, as well as breaking up a few other chances that the Cobbers had within the box. Lawhead is now 2-2-0 on the year.
The Scots play again next Saturday, traveling to St. Catherine to take on the Wildcats at 1 p.m. If you cannot make it out to the game, follow along with the live video and stat links that can be found on the schedule page.
