ST. PAUL, Minn. – A penalty kick in the fifth minute of the first overtime period proved to be the difference as the Macalester College women's soccer team lost to St. Catherine University, 3-2 Saturday afternoon at St. Kate's Field. The Scots drop to 2-10-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the conference, while the Wildcats improve to 10-4, 6-2 MIAC.
Sophomore midfielder
Carolyn Eckstein (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) tallied her second goal of the season in the 23rd minute to give the Scots an early 1-0 lead. St. Kate's tied the score in the 32nd minute on a goal by Amanda Carey, but Macalester regained the lead five minutes later with a penalty kick that was converted by sophomore forward
Alice Bieda (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North). The goal is Bieda's team-leading sixth of the season.
Just under nine minutes into the second half, Amanda Elton scored for the Wildcats to tie the score again, 2-2. The game remained tied through regulation, and 4:21 into the first overtime period, a foul was called on Macalester junior goalkeeper
Kate Lawhead (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie) in the penalty area. Taylor Johnson converted the ensuing penalty kick to give St. Kate's the win.
Lawhead registered a career-best 12 saves, as the Scots were out-shot, 24-7 for the game. Taylor Koop made five saves for St. Kate's.
Macalester hosts UW-Eau Claire in a non-conference game on Wednesday, Oct. 23, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
