ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team fell to Carleton College, 67-51 in a MIAC game Monday evening in the Leonard Center. Macalester drops to 3-10 overall and 0-8 in the league, while the Knights improve to 4-8, 2-5 MIAC.
After a basket by sophomore
Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado) put Macalester up 17-14 with 7:16 left in the first half, Carleton scored 14 of the next 16 points to lead 28-19 at the 1:44 mark. Senior forward
Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) hit a three-pointer and a free throw before halftime to make the score 28-23 Knights at the break. Both teams struggled from the field in the first half, with the Scots shooting 28.6 percent compared to 37.9 percent for Carleton.
With Macalester still trailing by five early in the second half, Ramos made two free throws to cut the deficit to 33-30 with 15:53 to play. The Knights responded with an 11-0 run, including three straight three-pointers by Joe Thursby, to lead 44-30 with 12:08 remaining. The Scots never recovered, as Carleton led by as many as 20 points down the stretch. The Knights made 6-of-13 from three-point range in the second half, while Macalester shot 3-of-15 from beyond the arc after halftime.
Ferm tallied 11 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocks for his seventh double-double of the season. Ramos had 11 points and six boards, while senior guard
Mike Babb (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney) scored 10 points. Kent Hanson led Carleton with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
The Scots travel to face St. Olaf College on Wednesday, Jan. 9 for another MIAC contest. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
