Women's Basketball: Scots Drop In Final Seconds To Bennies

ST.PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester women's basketball team fell to the College of Saint Benedict this afternoon in another close matchup. The Scots lost 64-60 at home and will look forward to two straight road games until returning home to play Gustavus Adolphus.

The first quarter was back and forth for most of the period. Down three points with three minutes to go, sophomore Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard-Westlake), who led the Scots with a season-high 22 points on the day, tied the game 12-12 with a shot from behind the arc. The Scots then finished the quarter up 16-12 with two made layups by sophomores Luci Swift (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) and Katherine Podoll (San Geronimo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake).

Macalester then went on an unanswered nine point run to begin the second quarter, extending their lead to 13 points. The Bennies returned with a scoring run and with over three minutes left in the half the Scots lead had been cut to four points. Junior  Tyana Loiselle (Bloomer,Wis./Chippewa Falls) sunk a jumper for the Scots which she followed up with a fast break layup. The Bennies, unable to answer, then saw Podoll score a layup and Barraza sink a three to end the half for the Scots up 36-25.

Out of the break, Macalester continued to hold their lead in the third quarter with help from five different players scoring. The Scots had 29 points from their bench to the Bennies four points on the day. The third quarter ended with Macalester leading by 54-41.

But in the fourth, Saint Benedict outscored Macalester 23-6 to make a comeback, tying the game 60-60 with 2:39 to play. The Bennies then took just their second lead of the game with a minute left and solidified their win with two free throws with five seconds left.

The Scots return to play on Wednesday, Jan. 9, against St. Olaf College at 5:00 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
