Women's Basketball: Scots Grab First MIAC Win Away At St. Olaf

Northfield, Minn.- The Macalester women's basketball team beat St. Olaf College on the road tonight. The Scots won 75-51 for their first MIAC win of the season. Sophomore Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) led with 22 points and four assists.

The Scots took a quick 5-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a free throw and lay up by Barraza as well as a made layup by fellow sophomore Kayla Togneri (Ventura, Calif./Ventura). The game remained close however, tied three times in the remaining minutes, and the quarter ended 14-14.

Coming into the second period, the Oles took a lead of 13 points as the Scots only scored three points in the first seven minutes of the quarter. But Macalester was kick started by a three pointer from senior Addy Perkins (St. Louis, Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) at 3:17 in the period. Barraza chipped away at St. Olaf's lead with a two layups to make the score 35-27 in favor of the Oles.

By midway through the third quarter the Scots tied the game 36-36 with a three pointer from sophomore Katherine Podoll (San Geronimo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake). Podoll followed it up with another from beyond the arc to take the lead with 4:18 in the period. The Scots then never gave up the lead the rest of the game. The third quarter ended 49-40 and then Macalester out scored the Oles 26-11 in the fourth.

The Scots forced four turnovers in the fourth, scoring off of two of them, which kept the Oles of the scoreboard in final minutes. Dominating the boards, Macalester outscored the Oles 21-2 on second chance points.

Podoll followed Barraza in scoring with 16 points and junior Tyana Loiselle (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls) tallied 12 points, tying her season high. Defensively, junior Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) ended the night with four steals.
