ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team lost a MIAC home game to No. 19 Saint John's University, 92-50 Saturday afternoon in the Leonard Center. Macalester is now 3-9 overall and 0-7 in the conference, while the Johnnies (10-1) remain unbeaten in the MIAC with a 5-0 record.
Saint John's took control of the game in the first half with a 21-6 run that resulted in a 35-17 lead with four minutes on the clock. The lead grew to as many as 22 before first year guard
Nick Scibelli (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) hit a deep three-pointer at the buzzer to make the score 42-23 Johnnies at the break. Saint John's shot 64.0 percent from the floor in the first half while holding the Scots to 28.6 percent.
Macalester held the hot hand early in the second half, with sophomore center
Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) and junior guard
Nikhil Smith (Augusta, Ga./Lakeside) hitting threes and senior forward
Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) scoring four points in a 10-4 run to cut the deficit to 46-33. From there it was all Johnnies, as the visitors scored the next nine points as a part of a 14-3 run for a 60-36 advantage with 12:41 to play. Macalester never came closer than 22 points the rest of the way, as Saint John's won its 11th straight MIAC regular-season game dating back to last season.
Henningfield paced the Scots with 22 points, while Ferm contributed 12 points, five rebounds and four assists. Jubie Alade tallied 16 points and six rebounds to lead Saint John's.
Macalester hosts Carleton College in another MIAC contest on Monday, Jan. 7. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
