Men’s Basketball: Macalester Falls to No. 5 St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team dropped a conference game at fifth-ranked St. Thomas, 94-61 Thursday night at Schoenecker Arena. The win allowed the Tommies to stay unbeaten in the MIAC and sweep the season series with the Scots.

In the first half, St. Thomas (18-1, 14-0 MIAC) held a 31-26 edge before reeling off a 25-6 spree over the final eight minutes of the period to take a commanding 56-32 lead at the break. The Scots shot 50.0 percent from the field in the first half but were unable to offset 13 three-pointers by St. Thomas, who made 7-of-9 threes during the run.

Baskets by sophomore guard Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado), junior guard Nikhil Smith (Augusta, Ga./Lakeside) and senior forward Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) to start the second half brought Macalester to within 56-38. The deficit remained 18 with 13:35 remaining when the Tommies scored 18 of the next 21 points to put the game out of reach, 83-50 with 10:07 left.

St. Thomas finished the game with 17 three-pointers and 23 points off 17 Scots' turnovers. Ferm registered 14 points, eight rebounds and two steals, while sophomore center Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) had 14 points, four boards and three assists. Ramos had a solid night with 13 points and four assists. St. Thomas' Ryan Lindberg and Burt Hedstrom led all players with 16 points apiece.

Macalester (4-16, 1-14 MIAC) visits No. 12 Saint John's on Saturday, Feb. 2. The MIAC game starts at 3:00 p.m. in Collegeville, Minn.
