Men’s Basketball: Macalester Loses MIAC Game at Saint John’s

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team fell to a nationally-ranked team for the second straight game, losing to No. 12 Saint John's, 80-59 Saturday afternoon at Sexton Arena. Senior forward Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) led all players with 20 points in the loss.

The Johnnies (16-4, 12-3 MIAC) broke open the game midway through the first half with a 24-4 run that made the score 40-19 with 3:20 left in the half. Saint John's hit nine three-pointers in the half en route to a 47-23 lead at the break.

Three pointers from Ferm and sophomore center Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) helped the Scots cut the deficit to 17, 48-31 early in the second half. The Johnnies pushed the lead up to 64-36 before Macalester tallied 12 straight points, including threes from senior guard Carl Salvino (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) and junior guard Nikhil Smith (Augusta, Ga./Lakeside), to pull to within 16, 64-48 with 7:33 to play. But that's as close as the Scots would get, as Saint John's closed out its second win of the season over Macalester.

Ferm notched his sixth game this season with 20 or more points and added four rebounds and three assists. Henningfield registered his fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while first year guard Eric Sathy (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) added eight points. Jube Alade paced Saint John's with 15 points.

Macalester (4-17, 1-15 MIAC) continues MIAC play with a home game against Concordia on Monday, Feb. 4. The game starts at 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
