Women's Basketball: Scots Lose Late to Pipers

ST.PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester women's basketball team lost to Hamline University today 60-51. The Scots were led by sophomores Katherine Podoll (San Geronimo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake) and Katie Sowerby (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) who each tallied 12 points. Defensively, sophomore Kayla Togneri (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) had a season and career high 12 rebounds on the night.

The first quarter saw the Pipers take a quick five point lead. But Macalester tied it 7-7 halfway through thanks to a three-pointer from Podoll and layups from sophomore Togneri and junior Tyana Loiselle (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls).  The Scots then continued their offensive push and lead at the end of the quarter 12-9.

Macalester opened up their largest lead of the night with just under two minutes played in the second quarter. Podoll opened the quarter with three-pointer, a consecutive rebound and block and a layup in the paint to put the Scots up 17-9. But the Pipers found their scoring form and by the end of the quarter Macalester remained ahead but with their lead cut to one point, 25-24.

From the end of the first half, the third quarter had six lead changes. The Scots ended up on top, 39-38, with two jumpers from Podoll and junior Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest).

The fourth quarter continued to be very close with neither team leading by more than one point until over halfway through the period. But from then on Hamline kept the lead as they shot 11 for 12 at the line, winning 60-51.

The Scots continue on the road on Saturday, Jan. 26, against Bethel University at 1:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
