MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team rallied from a late 13-point deficit before losing at Augsburg College, 71-69 Monday night in Si Melby Hall. The Scots are now 4-13 overall and 1-11 in league play, while the Auggies improve to 13-4, 9-3 MIAC.
Sophomore center
Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) had a big game with 30 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. It was his shooting that brought Macalester back late in the second half. With Augsburg leading 67-54 with 4:22 remaining in the game, Henningfield scored all 14 points in Macalester's 14-2 run that made the score 69-68 Auggies with 1:20 on the clock. Twelve of those points came on four three-pointers from Henningfield.
After Augsburg missed a layup on the next possession, the Scots had the ball down one with 46 seconds to play. Senior forward
Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) drove the lane and put up a shot in traffic, but it bounced off the rim, and Carter Duncan grabbed the rebound for Augsburg. A basket by Mitchell Martin at the other end put the Auggies up 71-68, and Henningfield missed a three-pointer that would have tied the game with seven seconds left. But the Auggies missed the front end of a one-and-one, and then fouled Ferm with two seconds on the clock. Ferm hit the first one and missed the second intentionally, but the Scots couldn't get the rebound, and the upset bid came to an end.
Macalester built an 18-9 lead midway through the first half, with Henningfield scoring eight points. Augsburg used a 20-10 run to lead, 29-28, eventually taking a 33-29 edge into halftime. In the second half, the Auggies pushed their lead to as many as eight before a basket by sophomore guard
Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado) and a three from senior guard
Mike Babb (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney) made the score 42-39 with 15:27 remaining. Later in the half, Augsburg led 52-48 before reeling off a 15-6 run for a commanding 67-54 advantage.
Henningfield was 11-of-20 from the field and 4-of-8 from three-point range. He also added two steals and a block to go with 17 boards. First year guard
Eric Sathy (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) registered 12 points and six rebounds, and junior guard
Nikhil Smith (Augusta, Ga./Lakeside) dished out a career-best 11 assists to go with three steals. Ferm finished with nine points, nine rebounds and two blocks, while Ramos also scored nine points and grabbed six boards. Booker Coplin, the MIAC's leading scorer, led Augsburg with 22 points, 17 rebounds, six steals and five assists.
The Scots return home to host Hamline University on Wednesday, Jan. 23, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
