ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team lost to Hamline University, 77-64 in a MIAC game Wednesday evening in the Leonard Center. Sophomore center
Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) continued his strong play with 25 points in the loss.
The Pipers (9-9, 6-7 MIAC) took control of the game midway through the first half with a 20-4 run that made the score 33-17 Hamline with 4:28 on the clock. The Scots were held to one field goal and two free throws during the run. A pair of baskets from Henningfield and a layup by first year guard
Eric Sathy (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) brought Macalester to within 11, but the Pipers closed out the half by scoring eight of the next 10 points to take a 42-25 lead into halftime.
Early in the second half, Sathy drained two three-pointers and Henningfield hit another to cut the deficit to 12, 46-34. But again Hamline would pull away, reeling off a 20-9 spree to widen the gap, 66-43 with 7:18 remaining. As they have done time and again this season, the Scots refused to give up. Eight points from Henningfield and five from sophomore guard
Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado) sparked a 16-2 Macalester run that made the score 68-59 with just under three minutes to play. After calling a timeout, the Pipers scored the next five points, and the Scots never came closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
Both teams shot the ball well in the second half, with Hamline shooting 57.1 percent and Macalester shooting 51.9 percent. The Pipers held a big advantage at the line, shooting 17-of-23 from the charity stripe for the game compared to 8-of-15 for the Scots.
Henningfield was 10-of-17 from the floor en route to 25 points and six rebounds. Sathy finished with 15 points, three assists and two steals, while junior guard
Nikhil Smith (Augusta, Ga./Lakeside) tallied nine points and seven assists. Jake Larson paced Hamline with 22 points.
