MOORHEAD, Minn.- The Macalester women's basketball team lost to Concordia College tonight. Their first game of 2019, the Scots lost to the Cobbers in the final seconds, 62-60.
A jump shot by junior Tyana Loiselle (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls) started the Scots off for the night. It was followed by two made layups by Katherine Podoll (San Geronimo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake) to put Macalester up quick 6-1 over Concordia. With two three pointers by sophomore Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard-Westlake), Macalester ended the quarter with a 14-11 lead.
In the second quarter, the Scots continued to open their lead as Barraza hit another shot from beyond the arc. Junior Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) added to the score sheet with six points, four coming in the paint. Ending the quarter with their largest lead of the game, the Scots went into the break up 32-23.
The Cobbers made a comeback in the third, cutting the Scots' lead to two points with two minutes left in the quarter. The lead was then one point as the quarter ended 43-42. The game continued to be close for the rest of the game. Macalester increased its advantage to four points with Podoll scoring a three-pointer followed by two free throws with three minutes played. With two minutes left Podoll and Hull combined layups to bring the Scots' lead to 58-53. But in the final moments of the game, tied at 60-60, the Cobbers scored a game winning layup with three seconds left to win, 62-60.
Podoll led the Scots with 18 points, her second highest scoring game of the season, and three assists.
The Scots return home on Saturday, Jan. 5, against the College of Saint Benedict at 1:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
