Men’s Basketball: Macalester Loses Thriller at Concordia, 66-65

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team suffered its second one-point MIAC loss of the season, as the Scots fell at Concordia College, 66-65 Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Auditorium. Macalester is now 3-8 overall and 0-6 in conference play, while the Cobbers improve to 2-8, 1-4 MIAC.

Macalester broke open a close game with seven straight points, including four from senior forward Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) and a three-pointer by first year guard Eric Sathy (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead), to lead 25-14 at the 7:40 mark of the first half. Back-to-back threes from Bryden Urie sparked a 15-5 run that brought Concordia to within one, 30-29 with 3:41 left in the half. A pair of baskets by sophomore center Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) pushed the lead to five before the Cobbers closed out the half with a 6-1 run to tie the score, 35-35 at the break.

A 9-2 run to start the second half gave Macalester a 44-37 edge, with Sathy contributing five points in the run. Concordia responded with eight straight points to regain the upper hand, 45-44 with 14:29 on the clock. Ferm, who committed four fouls in the first half and started the second half on the bench, entered the game in time to end the run with a spinning layup that put the Scots up, 46-45 at the 12:18 mark.

From that point the game went back and forth, with three lead changes and three ties over the next four minutes. Trailing 54-52, the Cobbers reeled off 10 straight points capped by back-to-back threes from Jordan Davis to take a commanding 62-54 advantage. But the Scots did not give up, with sophomore guard Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado) and Henningfield hitting three-pointers as a part of an 8-2 run to pull to within two, 64-62 with 1:53 remaining. After Davis hit a jumper with under a minute to play, Henningfield drained a three with 37 seconds left to make the score 66-65 Cobbers.

An offensive foul on Concordia's next possession gave the ball back to Macalester with 18 seconds to play. After a Cobber foul with 10 seconds left, junior guard Nikhil Smith (Augusta, Ga./Lakeside) dribbled into the corner and passed the ball back to Ramos, whose three-point attempt from the top of the key bounced off the rim and out as the buzzer sounded. The loss follows a 62-61 defeat at Hamline on Dec. 12.

Henningfield led all players with 21 points to go with seven rebounds. Ferm, who fouled out with 1:44 left in the game, finished with 14 points and five boards in 18 minutes. Smith contributed 11 points and three assists, while Sathy and Ramos each scored eight points. Ramos also grabbed seven boards and delivered four assists. Urie paced the Cobbers with 20 points on 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc.

The Scots continue MIAC play with a home game against Saint John's on Saturday, Jan. 5. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
