Women's Basketball: Career High From Barraza Helps Topple St. Catherine

ST.PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester women's basketball team beat St. Catherine University at home today, 75-56. Sophomore Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) had a career high of 27 points to help the Scots to their second MIAC win of the year. Macalester again had a significant contribution by the bench that scored 30 points on the day.

In the first quarter the Scots took a fast lead and shutout the Wildcats. Starting off with a three pointer from sophomore Katherine Podoll (San Geronimo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake), Macalester went up 11-0 with 3:04 to play. The Scots only let St. Catherine complete two free throws the rest of the half, while sophomore Katie Sowerby (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) and senior Addy Perkins (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) went perfect at the free throw line and helped the Scots end the quarter up 15-2.

Macalester kept their lead large, despite the Wildcats finding their shooting form in the second quarter, until four minutes left to play in the half. With their lead cut down to just four points, Barraza hit on of her five three pointers to kickstart the Scots. Junior Tyana Loiselle (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls), who had a season high of 13 points today and six assists, hit two straight jumpers to bring the score to 30-19. In the last two minutes, Barraza tallied a four point play and ended the quarter with a three pointer, assisted by Loiselle, to send the Scots into the locker room winning 42-20.

The third quarter, the Scots did not let up with Macalester's bench tallying 10 of their 21 points in the quarter. With just over eight minutes left, Barraza tallied her second four point play of the day.

Then at 6:02, junior Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) hit a jumper to increase the Scots lead to the largest of the quarter, 28 points. Macalester ended the third up 63-40. Despite being out scored 16-12 in the fourth quarter by the Wildcats, Macalester maintained their lead as Barraza and Loiselle continued to shoot well. The Scots beat the Wildcats 75-56, with three players tallying double-digit points.

The Scots continue on the road on Saturday, Jan. 23, against Hamline University at 7:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
