Women's Basketball: Macalester Stumbles At Home Against Gusties

ST.PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester women's basketball team lost at home to Gustavus Adolphus tonight in their second meeting of the season. The Scots fell to the Gusties 74-65.

Macalester came out aggressive in the first quarter and went up 10-3 with just under four minutes played in the game. Junior Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) started the Scots off with a good jumper followed by three-point play after being fouled on a made layup. Hull then scored a fast break layup from an assist by sophomore Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) who then scored a three pointer on the next play after a Gustie turnover.

Gustavus were able to find their scoring form and the quarter ended tied at 17-17. The game then went closely back and forth for the remainder of the half. Barraza scored from beyond the arc for the first points of the second quarter, was fouled, and completed the four point play. The Scots then went on a 12-4 scoring run in the first two minutes of the second quarter. Macalester tallied 13 of their 18 assists in the first half and saw their bench score 20 points.

The Gusties then came back and took the lead with with 3:38 left in the quarter and finished the half up 37-36. Out of the break the Scots fell behind nine quick points. Two made free throws from first year Celine Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) kick started the Scots and was followed by three consecutive made layups by Barraza to help the Scots end the half just down 55-50.

Macalester continued to battle in the fourth to bring the Gusties lead to one point with 5:30 left in the game after two made free throws from sophomore Katherine Podoll (San Geronimo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake). The Scots kept answering the Gusties. After following back down four points, Barraza hit her fourth three pointer to make the score 66-65 at 2:46. But after the Gusties returned a made three pointer, the Scots battled against the clock to come back and were unable to find the win. Barraza again led the Scots with 21 points and five assists.

The Scots return home on Saturday, Jan. 19, against St. Catherine's University at 1:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
