ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester College women's soccer team lost to Hamline University today in the Scots first MIAC match of the season.
The Scots quickly found themselves behind a goal as the Pipers scored with just over a minute of regular time played in the first half.
But Macalester answered just as quickly as sophomore
Georgia Kazemi (Missoula, Mont./Hellgate) scored her first goal of the season in the fifth minute. Kazemi struck the ball almost 30 yards out to roof the Hamline keeper and tie the game. The Scots continued to offensively attack, taking five shots and two corners in the remainder of the half. However, the game went into half tied 1-1.
Neither team were able to break the stalemate in the second half despite Macalester outshooting the Pipers. Sophomore keeper Kate Lawhead (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie) kept the Scots in the game with a crucial save in the 90th minute and sent the game into extra time. She would go one to have a season high of seven saves on the night.
The score remained the same for the first overtime period despite sophomore
Yukeria Haywood (Stone Mountain, Ga./Marist School) shot on goal for the Scots and Hamline hitting the Macalester post. Into the second overtime, Hamline needed just one minute of play to secure the win over Macalester 2-1.
The Scots will return home Saturday., Sept. 15, to face St. Catherine University at 1:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
