Baseball: Walk-Off Win Helps Macalester Sweep St. Olaf

ST. PAUL, Minn. – First year Jack Sahargun (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tosoro) singled home junior Sam Goldberg (N. Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wooton) in the bottom of the ninth for a 9-8 win in Game 2, as the Macalester College baseball team earned a sweep of St. Olaf Wednesday afternoon at Nicholson Field. The Scots improve to 21-14 overall and 11-7 in conference play, while the Oles drop to 14-18, 4-12 MIAC.

After Sam Stuckmayer's third home run of the game put St. Olaf on top, 8-7 in the top of the ninth of Game 2, Macalester put runners on second and third with nobody out on an error and a double by Goldberg in the bottom of the ninth. Sophomore Carl Francalangia (West Hartford, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee School) followed with a single through the left side to plate senior Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson) and tie the score at 8-8. Sahargun, who did not have a hit in six at-bats to that point on Wednesday, drove the first pitch into left field for a single to bring home Goldberg with the walk-off, game-winning run.

The Scots trailed for most of Game 2, as the Oles scored two runs in the second and got a two-run homer from Stuckmayer in the third for a 5-1 lead. An RBI double from junior Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) and a two-run single by McMullen in the bottom of the third brought Macalester to within a run, 5-4. Stuckmayer struck again with a solo shot in the top of the fifth for a 6-4 St. Olaf lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Low led off with his sixth home run of the season. Senior Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) singled and moved to third on a double by McMullen, then Goldberg hit a sacrifice fly that tied the game at 6-6. Still in the fifth, McMullen scored on a bunt by Sahargun to take a 7-6 edge. But in the seventh, St. Olaf loaded the bases on a single, an error and a walk, with Sam Pressman getting hit by a pitch to plate the tying run and send the game into extra innings.

The first game did not have the late-game heroics of the second game, with the Scots taking a 10-5 victory. Macalester struck for four runs in the third inning, including a three-run homer by Goldberg, to take a commanding 5-2 lead. Two more runs in the fourth made it 7-2, and after the Oles scored a run in the fifth and sixth innings, Low, Brantner and Goldberg drove in runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 10-4. St. Olaf closed out the scoring with a homer by Jake Ossell in the top of the seventh.

Sophomore pitcher Matthew Plisko (Alpharetta, Ga./Pace Academy) went six innings and allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out eight and walking two to improve to 8-1 on the season. Goldberg and senior Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) each had three hits in Game 1, with Goldberg recording four RBIs. First year Alex Denzler (New York, N.Y./Trevor Day School) earned the win in Game 2, giving up a run on two hits in two innings of relief. Low went 4-for-4 with three doubles, a home run and three RBIs.

Macalester concludes the regular season on Monday, May 7 with a conference twinbill against Concordia College. The first game starts at 2:30 p.m. at Nicholson Field.
