Baseball: Macalester Defeats Northwestern-St. Paul, 12-3

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team earned a non-conference victory on the road, beating the University of Northwestern, 12-3 Tuesday afternoon at Reynolds Field. The Scots improve to 10-7 with the win, while the Eagles fall to 4-11.

Macalester scored all 12 runs in the first four innings of the game, including a four-run first inning and a six-run third inning. Junior Sam Goldberg (N. Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) hit a two-run double in the first and added a triple in the third that scored senior Ben Castagnetti (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman). Castagnetti also hit a RBI double in the first, while senior Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) had a pair of RBI singles in the second and third innings. Seniors Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson), juniors Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) and Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont), and sophomores Carl Francalangia (West Hartford, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee School) and Alex Bearden (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute Country Day) all drove in runs in the game.

Goldberg, who delivered the game-winning hit in Sunday's 4-3 win over Bethany Lutheran, was 3-for-3 with a run and three RBIs, while Brantner went 2-for-2.

Junior left-hander Thomas Shogren (Woodbury, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) started on the mound and gave up a run on two hits while striking out three in three innings of work for the win. First year pitcher Andrew Polk (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prep) tossed three scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts.

Macalester begins MIAC play on Saturday, Mar. 31 at Gustavus Adolphus. The first game of the conference doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
