ROSEVILLE, Minn. – A walk-off, two-out single by junior
Sam Goldberg (N. Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) allowed the Macalester College baseball team to win Game 2, 4-3 and earn a sweep of Bethany Lutheran College in a non-conference doubleheader Sunday night at the University of Northwestern's Reynolds Field. The Scots, who won the first game, 9-4, improve to 9-7 with the wins, while the Vikings fall to 4-6.
Bethany Lutheran took a 3-2 lead in Game 2 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Macalester put a runner on second base in both the fifth and sixth innings but was not able to get the key hit. Then in the bottom of the seventh, senior
Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson) hit a one-out single, and senior
Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) followed with a walk. After a strikeout, senior
Ben Castagnetti (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) drew a two-out walk to load the bases for Goldberg. With a 2-2 count, Goldberg lined a single through the right side, plating McMullen and Brantner with the tying and winning runs.
Goldberg went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, while junior
Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) hit a solo home run in the second inning. Senior lefty
Joe Trier (Madison, Wis./Madison West) started and allowed three runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings. Junior
Zach Anderson (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Twp.) came on in relief and blanked the Vikings on one hit while striking out three and walking two in 2 2/3 innings for the win.
In the first game, the Scots loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning for Castagnetti, who blasted a grand slam home run over the left field fence for a 4-0 lead. After Bethany Lutheran scored twice in the top of the second, junior
Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) singled home first year
Cooper Jensen (Washington, D.C./The Field School) to make the score 5-2.
Abelson also answered a solo home run by Mylo Hommes in the top of the fourth with a solo shot of his own in the bottom of the fourth. Also in the fourth, Brantner hit a sacrifice fly that brought home senior
Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) for a 7-3 lead. Then in the fifth, Goldberg doubled home Castagnetti and later scored on a single by Jensen to make the score 9-3 Scots. The Vikings closed out the scoring with a run in the top of the sixth. Castagnetti went 4-for-4 with two singles, a double, a homer and four runs batted in. Abelson also was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
Junior
