TUCSON, Ariz. – The Macalester College baseball team fell to Maryville State, 16-6 Sunday afternoon at the Tucson Invitational, held at the Kino Sports Complex. The Scots are now 4-3 on the season, while the Comets, who are members of the NAIA, improve to 6-5.
Macalester started quickly, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Junior
Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) belted a two-run triple to right centerfield, then scored on an error. Maryville scored a run in the top of the second inning and pushed three runs across in the third to lead, 4-3. In the bottom of the third, senior
Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) doubled home senior
Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic). Low followed with a two-run single that plated Brantner and senior
Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson) for a 6-4 lead.
The Comets took control of the game from that point, scoring five runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and four in the sixth while holding the Scots scoreless the rest of the way. Baretta, Brantner, Low and junior
Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) had two hits apiece for Macalester.
The Scots face Salem State University on Monday, Mar. 12 at the Tucson Invitational. The first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. Pacific at the Kino Sports Complex.
