NORTHFIELD, Minn.- The Macalester College women's basketball team beat Carleton College in a close overtime win. The Scots beat the Knights 67-59, ending the season 1-1 against Carleton.
Macalester is now 8-13 and 4-10 in the MIAC.
The Scots traded baskets with Carleton in a low scoring first quarter, going into the break up 10-9. Macalester defended the boards against the Knights with 53 rebounds in the game, 12 of them were tallied by senior center Regan Fruh (Helena, Mont./ Helena). Fruh also totaled 24 points, becoming Macalester women's basketball sixth all-time leading scorer.
Macalester did not trail the entire second half and led the Knights by as much as seven points. In the third minute of the second quarter, senior guard Leah Gray (San Rafael, Calif./Branson School) secured this seven-point lead with her second basket of the night. Gray went on to tally 16 points and 12 rebounds on the night.
The Scots went into the halftime up 26-21 and return to the court to lead the entire third quarter and to stretch the lead to as much as 11 points. The Scots only out scored the Knights 14-11 in the third however, but were able to maintain the lead by shooting 50 percent behind the arc and 75 percent at the line.
Carleton came back on the offense at the start of the fourth quarter with the score 40-32. Macalester allowed the Knights to outscore them 22-14 in the final quarter, with Fruh and senior guard Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) both scoring 6 points.
With three minutes to go the Scots were tied with Carleton at 51-51. The Scots pulled ahead 54-53 with a 3-point shot from Gregorich at 1:51. Carleton tied the score with a free-throw and with 27 seconds to go the Scots had a chance to win with an inbound play and a layup miss by Fruh. Carleton was unable to capitalize on a three-pointer in the final seconds, sending the game to overtime 54-54.
The Scots held defensively in overtime, not allowing Carleton to score until just under two minutes left in the first overtime period. Meanwhile, Fruh scored two layups and senior guard Grace Dickman (Maspeth, N.Y./Cate School (Calif.)) tallied a jumper to make the score 60-54.
The Scots won the game 67-59, capitalizing on a clinical free-throw shooting game. Shooting as a team at 83 percent, Gregorich, Dickman and Gray scored seven free-throws in the last minute to secure the win.
Carleton was led by Sarah Waldfogel with 30 points.
The Scots return to action home against Gustavus Adolphus on Wed., Feb. 07 iin Saint Paul, Minn. at 7:00 p.m.
