Women's Basketball: Scots Fall Short In Comeback, Lose to Oles

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester women's basketball team lost their first conference game today against St. Olaf, 78-64. The Scots made a strong comeback in the second half but were unable to close out the match.

The Oles took the lead quick and went up 10-2 with less than three minutes played. Two jumpers from junior Tyana Loiselle (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls) kept the Scots in the game to make it 13-6. The Oles continued their strong shooting and ended the quarter up 22-15.

The Scots fell to their largest lead in the second quarter down 19 points with two minutes left. First year Celine Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) tallied a jumper and a made free-throw from sophomore Luci Swift (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) brought the score to 44-28 to end the first half.

With 6:32 left in the third quarter the Scots began to chip away at the St. Olaf lead, mounting a second half comeback. Started off by two free-throws from sophomore Katherine Podoll (San Geronimo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake) and a fast break three-pointer from the Swift, the Scots chipped the lead to 11 points to go down 46-35. Swift ended the night the Scots scoring leader with 15 points, shooting 75 percent from the line.  This is the second game in a row she has a career scoring night.

Macalester forced six turnovers in the quarter and ended the quarter when sophomore Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) sunk a three pointer with 12 seconds left.

Only down seven points, the Scots cut the lead to one, when Barraza hit two shots from beyond the arc to make the game 55-54. The game remained even on both ends for the rest of the 4th quarter until with ten minutes left the Oles pulled ahead 74-64. St. Olaf then went perfect at the line to end the game 78-64.

Macalester returns to the court against Gustavus Adolphus away on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 7:00 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
