Women's Basketball: Macalester Falls On The Road To Gusties

ST. PETER, Minn.- The Macalester women's basketball team fell today to Gustavus Adolphus College, losing 70-56.

The Scots started off with a two-pointer from junior Tyana Loiselle (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls) who hit a jumper for the first points of the game. The game then remained close until the Gusties took a six point lead with three minutes to go in the first quarter which was extended to 16-8 to end the period.

Down 15 points midway through the second quarter, the Scots went on an 11-point scoring run to bring the score to 25-21. Sophomore Katie Sowerby (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais ) started Macalester off on the run with a driving layup with 3:45 minutes left in the quarter.

Loiselle then tallied a pull up jumper which was followed by layups from junior Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) and junior Caitlyn Burmester (Columbia, MD./Atholton). The 11-point run was topped off with a three-pointer from sophomore Luci Swift (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins). But the Gusties came back in the final minutes and made the score 31-21 going into halftime.

Into the third, the teams traded buckets with the Scots keeping the Gusties lead to under ten points. With eight minutes gone, the Gusties went to the line to extend their lead until Loiselle made the Scots last shot of the quarter with the score at 49-35.

Sophomore Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) hit a three-pointer to start the Scots off in the fourth followed by two consecutive layup in the paint from sophomore Katherine Podoll (San Geronimo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake). However, the Scots were not able to stop the Gusties who went on to win 70-56.

Hull led the Scots with 16 points and six rebounds. Junior Loiselle followed her with 12 points and four rebounds.

The Scots return home on Saturday, Dec. 8, against Bethel University at 1:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
