Women's Basketball: Scots Lose Home Opener

ST.PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester women's basketball team lost their home opener tonight to Bethany Lutheran College tonight, 69-55. 

The Scots fell behind quickly, with the Vikings taking a 7-0 lead in the first four minutes. However, Macalester made an offensive push and led at the end of the first period 17-15 thanks to a three pointer by first year Celine Sabbagh (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) in the final seconds.

In the second period, the Scots saw their lead disappear as the Vikings tallied 10 second chance points. The score, 33-23, in favor of the Vikings going into half.

Out of the break, the Scots had their best period of shooting of the night as they shot perfect from the line and capitalized on three of four of the Vikings turnovers. Lead scorer for Macalester, junior Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) scored eight of her 23 points in the third. However, the Vikings continued to pull away with a score of 55-37 at the end of the period.

In the final period the Scots ate away at a 22 point Vikings' lead to 13 points. Macalester scored ten off of second chance points. Hull again led the Scots in this effort scoring eight of the ten points, bringing the score to 67-54.  But the Scots did not have enough time to complete the come back and the Vikings took the win, 69-55. Sophomore Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) followed Hull in scoring with 14 points, scoring 12 from beyond the arc.

Macalester returns to play away against the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 4:00 p.m. in La Crosse, Wis.
