Women's Basketball: Podoll's and Swift's Career Highs Help Top North Central

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester women's basketball team won at home tonight 63-55 against the North Central University Rams. In their last game before conference play, the Scots were lead by sophomore forward Katherine Podoll (San Geronimo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake) with a career high of 19 points.

In a game that had eight lead changes and four ties, the Scots took the first lead quickly in the first. Jumping out to 7-2 thanks to a jumper and three-pointer from Podoll as well as a layup by fellow sophomore Kayla Togneri (Ventura, Calif./Ventura).

Despite a consistent back and forth matchup, the Scots held on to their lead through the first quarter and went into the break up 17-16.

Tied 26-26 with two minutes left in the second, the Rams then made a 7-0 run. The teams went into half with the Scots down 33-26.

Out of the break, the visitors continued to grow as the Scots unable to make a basket until three minutes in and now down 11 points. But a scoring run by sophomores Podoll, Togneri and Luci Swift (Luci Swift (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) brought the game within two, 41-39, with just over three minutes left. The Scots then forced four turnovers from the Rams and Podoll tallied a three-pointer and a layup to help the Scots take the lead 46-45.

In the fourth quarter, Macalester didn't look back as they led for most of the period including a crucial seven point scoring run beginning at 4:08 in the period. After Podoll scored 14 of her 19 points in the second half, the Scots secured their lead in the final seconds as sophomore Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) and junior Caitlyn Burmester (Columbia, MD./Atholton) went perfect from the line, four for four.

The Scots won 63-55 and are now 2-5 on the season.Barraza and Swift followed Podoll in scoring with 13 points and 12 points, respectively. Swift having a career high on the night.

The Scots return home on Saturday, Dec. 1, against St. Olaf College at 1:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
