Women's Basketball: Macalester Stumbles Against Univ. of Minn-Morris

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester women's basketball team lost a close one to the University of Minnesota-Morris today, 56-50, at home. This is the Scots third single-digit loss as they move to 1-5.

The Scots and the Cougars closely battled in the first quarter, with junior Tyana Loiselle (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls) scoring four late points for the Scots. But the University of Minnesota-Morris took the advantage 10-8 at the break.

The game continued to be close as junior Caitlyn Burmester (Columbia, MD./Atholton) scored a field goal to tie the game. Burmester was one of five Scots to score off the bench, tallying a total of 17 points during the game. But the Cougars took the lead into halftime up 26-20.

The Scots then had their largest lead of the night in the third quarter, up four with less than two minutes in the period. Macalester gained their lead after they had a seven point unanswered streak, helping them out shoot Morris 20-12 in the third.

The Scots offensive push started with a three-pointer from sophomore Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) and was followed by a fast break jumper from sophomore Kayla Togneri (Ventura, Calif./Ventura).  Into the fourth period, Macalester had taken away the Cougars lead and had the advantage at 40-38.

But after four minutes into the final period, the Scots fell down 46-40 to the Cougars. Another three-pointer from Barraza brought the Scots back within three. Togneri again followed with another layup to make the score 46-45 to Morris with under five minutes left. Morris then extended its lead seven with 1:31 left. A made free throw by sophomore Rose Lutz (Minneapolis, Minn./South) and a good shot from beyond the arc by sophomore Katherine Podoll (San Geronimo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake) took the Cougars lead to 53-50.

However, Macalester could not get the victory as they were forced to foul in the last thirty seconds and Morris went three for one at the line.

The Scots were again lead by sophomore Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) who tallied 11 points and two steals.

Macalester plays at home against against North Central University on Thursday, Nov. 29, at 7:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
