Women's Basketball: Macalester Gets First Win Over Northwestern

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester women's basketball team beat the University of Northwestern (Minn.) for the Scots first win of the season, 57-50.

The game began even with the teams trading baskets until the Scots took the lead 12-10 a the end of the first quarter. Sophomore Katherine Podoll (San Geronimo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake) got the Scots started with a layup in the paint and followed that up with a three-pointer. Tied 10-10 with over a minute left, sophomore Kayla Togneri (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) tallied a jumper to take the lead into the second quarter.

In the second, the Scots expanded their lead to nine points with five minutes left in the half. Despite a late push by the Eagles, Macalester kept their lead thanks to junior Tyana Loiselle (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls) who tallied a two-point jumper and a free throw to go into halftime 29-25. By the end of the night Loiselle tallied 11 points, four steals and five rebounds.

Macalester did not let up their lead out of the break, going up 11 points with three minutes to go from two three pointers from sophomore Luci Swift (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins).

In the fourth, with the Scots leading by as much as ten with 2:19 left, Northwestern made an offensive push to come within three points. With the score at 53-50, sophomore Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) sunk four straight free throws in the last thirty seconds to seal the win for Macalester.

Macalester was lead by Loiselle, Podoll and Barraza who all tallied 11 points. Togneri added two more blocks to bring her total to 11 for the season.

The Scots return to play on Tuesday, Nov. 27, against the University of Minnesota- Morris at home at 7 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
