Women's Basketball: Macalester Loses Tight One to Buena Vista

WHEATON, Ill.- The Macalester women's basketball team lost to Buena Vista University today. The game came down to the final seconds as the Scots lost 57-56 in their second game of the Beth Baker Classic.

The game remind tight between both teams in the first quarter until the Scots pulled away with the game in the last two minutes of the period. Macalester out scored the Beavers 7-1 in the last two minutes to go into the second up 18-10. The Scots run started with a two free throws from junior Tyana Loiselle (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls). Then junior Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) sunk a three pointer to put the Scots at 16-10. Loiselle then tallied two more free throws to end the quarter up eight points.

The Scots continued to open the lead as they out shot the Beavers to go into the halftime break up 38-25. Macalester's lead came from six different players scoring in the second quarter, with 10 points coming in the paint and seven from second chance points.

Out of the break the Scots maintained their lead throughout the third quarter. Sophomore Katherine Podoll (San Geronimo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake) scored four points and tallied two defense rebounds to help the Scots extend to a lead of 50-40 by the end of the period.

Into the fourth quarter the Beavers made a 12-1 run on the Scots and took the lead midway through the period 52-51. The game then became extremely tight with both teams trading buckets. After five made free throws, four tallied by Loiselle and one by Podoll, the Scots tied the game at 56-56. With seven second to go, the Scots fouled Buena Vista and saw them score the winning free throw to come back 57-56 over Macalester.

Macalester returns to play against the University of Northwestern (Minn.) away on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 5:30 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
