Men’s Basketball: Beloit Holds Off Macalester, 74-65

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team fell to Beloit College, 74-65 in a non-conference home game Saturday afternoon in the Leonard Center. The loss drops the Scots to 1-2 overall, while the Buccaneers improve to 1-2.

In the first half, Macalester trailed by as many as nine points, including 28-19 with 5:23 on the clock. With Beloit up seven with a minute to go in the half, senior forward Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) and sophomore center Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) hit back-to-back layups. A Buccaneer turnover gave the ball back to the Scots with under four seconds left, and junior guard Nikhil Smith (Augusta, Ga./Lakeside) drained a deep three as the buzzer sounded to tie the score at 32-32.

At the start of the second half, the teams exchanged the lead five times before the Scots used a 14-7 run, capped by a three-pointer from Ferm, to take a 51-45 lead with 12 minutes remaining. Macalester held onto the advantage and led 63-59 with six minutes left before Beloit tallied 11 straight points to lead 70-63 with 1:31 to play. Darin Empereur made a three at the end of the run. A pair of free throws by Henningfield made it a five-point game with 1:17 left, but the Buccaneers hit their free throws down the stretch to clinch the win.

Beloit shot 58.6 from the field in the second half and out-rebounded Macalester, 47-32 for the game. Henningfield led the Scots with 18 points to go with six rebounds and three assists. Ferm notched his second straight double-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. First year guard Eric Sathy (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) made three three-pointers en route to 13 points, while Smith hit four treys to finish with 12 points. Tristan Shoup paced the Buccaneers with 19 points and seven boards.

Macalester hits the road for another non-league contest at the University of Northwestern on Tuesday, Nov. 20. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. in Roseville, Minn.
