Men’s Basketball: Macalester Defeats Univ. of Northwestern on the Road, 75-71

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Senior forward Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) tallied a game-high 29 points to lead the Macalester College men's basketball team to a road victory at the University of Northwestern, 75-71 Tuesday night in the Ericksen Center. The Scots improve to 2-2 overall, while the Eagles fall to 2-2.

The win is Macalester's first over Northwestern since 2007, when current head coach Abe Woldeslassie '08 sank a pair of free throws with one second on the clock to give the Scots an 83-82 victory. Tuesday's win ends a streak of 10 straight losses to the Eagles.

After trailing 37-27 at halftime and 48-36 five minutes into the second half, Macalester used an 18-5 run, including a pair of threes from senior guard Mike Babb (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney), to take a 54-53 lead with 8:44 remaining. The teams exchanged the lead five times, with Northwestern holding a 61-60 edge with 5:37 left. Three consecutive baskets by Ferm put the Scots up 66-61, only to have the Eagles come back to tie the score at 68-68 with a minute to play.

Again Babb came up big, drilling a three-pointer on the next possession to give Macalester some breathing room. Northwestern missed three-pointers on its next two possessions, and the Scots went 4-of-4 from the line to close out the win. Macalester shot a blistering 61.3 percent from the field in the second half, with Babb scoring all of his career-high 11 points after halftime.

Ferm was 13-of-17 from the field while grabbing 11 rebounds. He also notched four assists, two blocks and two steals to propel Macalester to victory. Sophomore center Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) contributed 15 points and nine rebounds, while junior guard Nikhil Smith (Augusta, Ga./Lakeside) had nine points and three assists. Tanner Youngberg and Anderson Bazile Jr. led the Eagles with 21 and 20 points, respectively.

Macalester begins the MIAC schedule with a home game against St. Thomas on Wednesday, Nov. 28. The game starts at 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
