ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester College women's soccer team beat the College of St. Scholastica today 1-0 in a non-conference matchup.
The Saints and Scots battled an even first half but neither team could break the scoreless deadlock before the halftime whistle. Sophomore Aliya Mahmoud (Portland, Ore/Caitlin Gabel) had Macalester's biggest chance with an open header at the six-yard box. But Haywood sent it wide and the teams went in at half 0-0.
The game continued to be scoreless and looked to be going into overtime when in the 83rd minute, sophomore Kate Bond (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) crossed the ball from the left flank and saw it skip through the Saints box to wide open sophomore Yukeria Haywood (Stone Mountain, Ga./Marist School) who hit the ball first time into the right corner of St. Scholastica's goal. Haywood's goal is her second of the year and was the winner for the Scots as they hung on to the game to win, their first in five games.
The Scots stay at home and return to MIAC play when they face St. Olaf College on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 4:30 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
