Women's Soccer: Scots Win Over Univ. of Wisconsin-Superior, 1-0

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester College women's soccer team beat the University of Wisconsin - Superior today, , in their last non-conference game of the season. The Scots now enter the final stretch of their season with just four games left to play.

While the first half ended 0-0, it did not lack offensive play by Macalester. The Scots out shot the Yellowjackets 11-1, with five forcing a Superior save and one shot by sophomore Aliya Mahmoud (Portland, Ore./Caitlin Gabel) which was denied by the crossbar. Sophomore keeper Kayla Togneri (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) and the Scots defense allowed just on shot on target which Togneri saved.

Out of the break, still 0-0, Macalester continued to dominate in Superior's defensive half. Twenty minutes into the half the Scots had ten shots on goal and allowed nothing to reach Togneri in the Macalester goal.

The Scots finally got a breakthrough in the 75th minute when first year Alice Bieda (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) dribbled the ball into the Yellowjackets box and was dispossessed around the six-yard line. But sophomore Yukeria Haywood (Stone Mountain, Ga./Marist School) was there to pick up the rebound, hitting a one time shot to the right of the Superior keeper and in for a Scots 1-0 lead. This was Haywood's third goal of the season and she now leads the Scots in goals.

Haywood's goal remained the game winner as Macalester won 1-0. The scots ended the game with 32 shots on goal and Togneri tallied her third shutout.

The Scots return home to play Bethel University on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
