Women's Basketball: Macalester Beats Hamline for First Win of 2018

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester College women's basketball team won a hard fought game at home against Hamline University, 63-58. With their first win of 2018, the Scots are now 5-7 and 2-4 in conference. 
 
In the first quarter the Scots and Pipers trade baskets in a physical match up with sophomore guard Tyana Loiselle (Bloomer, Wis./Chippewa Falls) scoring the Macalester's final two shots in the quarter to bring the score to 19-21, with the Scots just down two. Macalester then took charge in the second quarter, outscoring Hamline 15-9. Once again, Macalester had an all-team scoring effort with six different players scoring in the second quarter.
 
The Scots scored 17 points off the bench for the game. First year guard Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) scored the final three point shot in the second quarter to send the teams into halftime with Macalester up 34-30. Barraza had eight points and led the Scots four assists on the night.
 
The Pipers came in the second half to outscore the Scots 18-12. In a physical game, both teams had trouble protecting the ball with the Scots having eight turnovers in the third quarter and 18 overall. Each team also dealt with foul trouble, with Loiselle fouling out late in the fourth with nine points.
 
In the fourth quarter, the Scots came out hard and outscored the Pipers 17-10. Keeping Hamline scoreless for seven minutes of the quarter, Macalester won 63-58. Senior center Regan Fruh (Helena, Mont./Helena) led Macalester with 13 points, closely followed by sophomore guard Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./ Blue Valley Northwest) with 12 points.
 
The Pipers were led by their season lead scorer Alaina Quaranta who scored 19 points on the night.
 
The Scots return to action away against St. Olaf on Wed., Jan. 10 in St. Olaf, Minn. at 5:45 p.m.
