ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team fell to MIAC foe Augsburg University, 110-86 at home Saturday afternoon in the Leonard Center. The Scots drop to 2-14 overall and 1-10 in conference play, while the Auggies improve to 13-4, 8-4 MIAC.
Macalester played well in the first half, building a 22-15 lead over the first seven minutes of the game. First year guard
Aidan Toner-Rodgers (Sebastopol, Calif./Analy) made two three-pointers and had eight points in the run. Augsburg outscored the Scots, 15-5 over the next 3:30 to lead 30-27. A basket by sophomore forward
Rob Newman (Westchester, N.Y./Rye Country Day) and two free throws from first year forward
Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) briefly gave Macalester a 32-31 edge. But the Auggies pushed their lead back to as many as eight points before Newman hit a three at the buzzer to make the score 54-49 Augsburg at the break.
Newman had 12 points in the first half, as the Scot shot 47.5 percent from the field compared to 44.4 percent for Augsburg.
In the second half, the Auggies opened up the period with an 8-2 run for a 62-51 advantage. After a layup by Toner-Rodgers and a free throw from Henningfield cut the deficit to 62-54, Augsburg took control of the game with a decisive 20-5 run that made the score 82-59 with 10:38 to play. Macalester never came closer than 19 points the rest of the way, as the Auggies outscored the Scots, 56-37 in the second half for the win.
Henningfield registered a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds to go with five blocks and two steals. Toner-Rodgers and Newman both finished with 12 points, while senior guard
Brett Olson (New London, Minn./New London-Spicer) tallied eight points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Augsburg's Collin Olmscheid was 13-of-13 from the free throw line and finished with 27 points.
Macalester will play its next four games on the road, starting with Monday's MIAC game at Bethel University. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in Arden Hills, Minn.
