Women's Basketball: Macalester Wins By Double Digits Over Martin Luther

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester College women's basketball team beat Martin Luther College today, 64-50, for the Scots sixth win. The Scots are now 6-9 on the season and 2-6 in the MIAC.
 
Macalester had a big game in the paint, scoring 36 points, and were impressive from the bench as Macalester's substitutes scored 20 points.
 
The Scots led the entire game, starting off with a 24-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. Senior center Regan Fruh (Helena, Mont./ Helena) started the Scots offense off with a layup in the first minute of the game. Fruh went on to have a big night in the paint, leading Macalester with 17 points, three blocks and three steals.
 
Macalester outscored the Knights 13-6 in the second quarter, leading by 22 points with three minutes left in the half, and went into the break up 37-19. The Scots shot 42 percent in the first half with senior Leah Gray (San Rafael, Calif./Branson School) scoring six points and blocking four shots as well as freshman Justine Barraza (Burbank, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) scoring six points. Grey ended tallying six points on the night while Barraza scored eight, as well as first year Katie Sowerby (Mill Valley, Calif./Ventura) and senior guard Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) scoring eight each.
 
The Scots were out shot by Martin Luther in the third quarter, 12-19. However, Macalester continued to push offensively with sophomore Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) having a big second half, scoring nine of her 11 points. The Scots went on to beat the Knights 64-50.
 
The Knights were led by Jade St. Germaine who scored 15 points on the night.
 
The Scots return to action home against St. Benedict on Wed., Jan. 17 in Saint Paul, Minn. at 7:00 p.m. at the Leonard Center.
