Men’s Soccer: No. 21 Macalester Stunned by No. 10 St. Thomas with Late Goal

ST. PAUL, Minn. – In a match-up of two nationally-ranked teams, the Macalester College men's soccer team fell to 10th-ranked St. Thomas, 1-0 in double-overtime Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The Scots (6-3-1), ranked 21st, suffer their first conference loss and drop to 3-1 in the league, while the Tommies are now 9-1, 5-0 MIAC.

The game remained scoreless through 90 minutes of regulation and the first 10-minute overtime period. With time winding down in the second overtime, a long throw-in by Christian Elliehausen from the left side bounced in the penalty area to Kevin Van Lieshout, who blasted a shot into the goal with just 11 seconds remaining for the win. The result ended Macalester's three-game winning streak and six-game unbeaten string.

St. Thomas held a significant advantage in shots (19-4), with junior goalkeeper Colton Wenig (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) making six saves. Aidan Hogan had one save for the Tommies. The game also was a rematch of last season's MIAC Playoff final, which ended in a 1-0 St. Thomas victory.

Macalester faces MIAC foe St. Olaf on Saturday, Oct. 7, beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
