Men’s Soccer: Big First Half Lifts No. 21 Macalester Past Concordia, 3-1

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Three first-half goals helped the Macalester College men's soccer team defeat Concordia College, 3-1 in a MIAC game Tuesday afternoon at Jake Christiansen Athletics Complex. The Scots, who are ranked 21st nationally, improve to 6-2-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference, while the Cobbers fall to 2-6-1, 0-3-1 MIAC.

Just 91 seconds into the game, senior midfielder Jake Burke (Dublin, Ireland/Shattuck St. Mary's) found the net with an assist from sophomore midfielder Nick Moore (Georgetown, Mass./Governor's Academy) to give Macalester a 1-0 lead. Then in the 24th minute, first year midfielder Theo Nsereko (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) tallied his first career goal to make the score 2-0 Scots. Junior midfielder Clayton Smith (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) assisted on Nsereko's goal.

Macalester completed its offensive burst less than a minute later, when junior midfielder Jamel Benhamida (Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's) converted a penalty kick following a Cobber foul in the penalty area.

Concordia's Spencer Lancaster scored in the 35th minute to get the Cobbers on the board and make the score 3-1.

The victory is the third in a row for Macalester, which is riding a six-game unbeaten streak.

Junior goalkeeper Colton Wenig (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) made one save for the Scots, while Jackson Carr had three saves for Concordia.

Macalester will host 10th-ranked St. Thomas in a rematch of last year's MIAC championship game on Saturday, Sept. 30. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
