Men’s Soccer: Macalester Beats Carleton on Moore’s Goal in OT

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senior midfielder Zach Moore (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) scored in the 94th minute to give the Macalester College men's soccer team a 2-1 comeback victory over Carleton College in a MIAC match Friday night at Macalester Stadium. The Scots improve to 5-2-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while the Knights fall to 5-3, 1-2 MIAC.

Moore's goal completed an improbable comeback following a goal by Carleton's Tashi Tsering in the 75th minute. A foul was called at the top of the Macalester penalty area, and Tsering's free kick was on the mark for a 1-0 Knights' lead. Less than three minutes later, sophomore defender Max Kent (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park) sent a high and long ball up the middle that sent senior forward Danny Baumann (Waterford, Wis./Muskego) in behind the defense. Baumann chipped the bouncing ball over goalkeeper Brandon Hilliard and into the goal to tie the score at 1-1 with under 13 minutes left in regulation.

Neither team scored before 90 minutes expired, sending the game into overtime. Less than four minutes into the first overtime period, Moore collected a loose ball about 25 yards out from the goal and blasted a shot into the left side of the net for the game-winner. The goal was Moore's first of the season and the fourth game-deciding tally of his career.

Macalester outshot Carleton, 11-7 with only Tsering's goal on frame for the Knights. Hilliard finished with four saves for Carleton.

The Scots continue MIAC play with a game at Concordia College on Tuesday, Sept. 26, beginning at 4:00 p.m. in Moorhead, Minn.
