WAVERLY, Iowa – A goal by sophomore defender
Max Kent (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park) in the 57th minute allowed the Macalester College men's soccer team to defeat Wartburg College, 1-0 in a key regional match-up Sunday afternoon at the Wartburg Soccer Field. The road victory gives the Scots a 4-2-1 record on the season, while the Knights, ranked 13th in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III Top 25 Poll, fall to 3-1-1.
After a scoreless first half, Macalester produced the only goal it would need 12 minutes into the second half. Senior midfielder
Jake Burke (Dublin, Ireland/Shattuck-St. Mary's) fed a pass to Kent, who blasted a shot into the upper left side of the goal for a 1-0 lead. The Macalester defense did the rest, as junior goalkeeper
Colton Wenig (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) made four saves after Kent's goal to preserve the win and hand Wartburg its first loss of the season.
Both teams took 14 shots in the game, with the Scots putting one more on goal (10) than the Knights (nine). Wenig stopped all nine shots on goal for his third consecutive shutout. Gunnar Lenzen also had nine saves for Wartburg.
The decision could play a role in the regional pecking order at the end of the season, as the Knights entered the game ranked second in the North Region, while the Scots were seventh.
Macalester returns to MIAC action with a home contest against Carleton on Friday, Sept. 22. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
