ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Macalester College baseball team closed out its non-conference schedule with a split against UW-Superior Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at Nicholson Field. The Scots are now 20-12 overall, while the Yellowjackets are 10-20.

Before the games, Macalester Athletics had a dedication ceremony to name the press box at the Baseball/Softball Complex the Andy Johnson Memorial Press Box after Macalester's longtime sports information director.

Trailing 5-2 in the first game, the Scots battled back in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score and send the game to extra innings. Senior Peter Bertel (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) singled home senior Quentin Stuart (Nashville, Ind./Nashville), and junior Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) hit a two-run double in the inning. The game remained tied at 5-5 until the top of the 10th, when the Yellowjackets scored twice for a 7-5 lead. Junior Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson) led off the bottom of the 10th with a double, but he was stranded there as UW-Superior closed out the win.

Bertel, Baretta, McMullen and senior Alex Dash (New York, N.Y./Columbia Grammar Prep) each had two hits for Macalester. Senior lefty Jamie Progebin (Washington, D.C./Maret) started and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out seven over four innings in a no-decision.

The Scots spotted the Yellowjackets a 5-0 lead over the first two innings of Game 2 before responding with seven runs in the bottom of the third. Junior Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) and first year Carl Francalangia (West Hartford, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) drove in two runs apiece, while McMullen and Baretta also had run-scoring hits in the third. After UW-Superior scored a run in the top of the fourth, McMullen came home on a grounder by sophomore Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) in the bottom of the fourth for an 8-6 lead.

The Yellowjackets scored a run in the fifth and had runners in scoring position in each of the last two innings. But first year pitcher Henry Smith (New York, N.Y./Poly Prep Country Day) ended each threat, getting a groundout with runners on the corners in the sixth and a strikeout and a pickoff with runners on first and second in the seventh.

Smith pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief in his first collegiate appearance, limiting UW-Superior to one run on three hits while walking four and fanning one for his first career victory. Baretta went 3-for-4 with a run and a RBI, while Abelson, McMullen, Stuart and Francalangia each delivered two hits.

Between games, the Scots honored their nine seniors: Bertel, Dash, Progebin, Stuart, Dylan Edwards-Gaherty (New York, N.Y./American Studies), Brendan O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont), Anson Justi (Columbia, Md./McDonogh School), Sam Thomas (Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill) and Doug Lewis (Duluth, Minn./Marshall).

Macalester, who currently sits in fourth place in the MIAC standings, faces first-place Bethel University Tuesday, Apr. 25 on the road. The doubleheader begins at 2:30 p.m. in Arden Hills, Minn.
