Baseball: Macalester Splits at Saint Mary’s

WINONA, Minn. - The Macalester College baseball team split a MIAC doubleheader with Saint Mary's University Saturday afternoon at Max Molock Field. The Scots, who lost the first game, 4-3 before taking Game 2, 13-2 in seven innings, are now 19-11 overall and 9-5 in league play. The Cardinals end the day 14-17 overall, 4-8 MIAC.

Macalester got on the scoreboard first in Game 1, with junior Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) hitting a double to score sophomore Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) in the top of the first inning. Then in the fifth, sophomore Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) blasted his fifth home run of the season for a 2-0 lead. Saint Mary's scored a run in the bottom of the fifth before Baretta singled home senior Quentin Stuart (Nashville, Ind./Nashville) in the sixth to make the score 3-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Cardinals scored twice on a RBI double from Jake Barry and a single by Joey Costello that plated Barry. Then in the seventh, Saint Mary's loaded the bases with nobody out for Bob Kinne, who singled to drive in the winning run. Baretta and junior Ben Castagnetti (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) had two hits apiece for the Scots. Sophomore Cole Chang (Pleasantville, N.Y./Collegiate School) pitched well in a no-decision, allowing three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings.

In the second game, Macalester made sure it wasn't close with three home runs in a 13-2 victory. Junior Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) opened the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning, with sophomore Sam Goldberg (N. Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) hitting a two-run double in the second for a 3-0 lead. Then in the fourth, Goldberg smacked a three-run homer, followed by a solo shot from Abelson for an 8-0 advantage. Still in the fourth, Stuart's two-run single plated Brantner and junior Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson) to make the score 10-0.

After Barry homered for the Cardinals in the bottom of the sixth, Baretta doubled to score Goldberg, and two more runs came home on an error in the top of the seventh to end the game at 13-2. Baretta, who had four hits on the day, has now hit a double in each of his last five games. Stuart went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs in Game 2, while Goldberg and Castagnetti also delivered two hits apiece in the win.

Junior lefty Joe Trier (Madison, Wis./West) started and pitched five shutout innings while allowing four hits and two walks. He also struck out five batters.

Macalester plays a non-conference doubleheader with UW-Superior on Sunday, Apr. 23. Before the first game, Macalester will dedicate the Andy Johnson Memorial Press Box in memory of the Scots' longtime sports information director. The ceremony will begin at 12:45 p.m. at Nicholson Field.
