ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team lost a pair of MIAC games to Gustavus Adolphus College, 13-0 and 4-1 on Thursday at the Macalester Softball Complex. The Scots fall to 18-16 overall and 6-10 in conference play, while the Gusties are 21-11, 8-6 MIAC.
Gustavus posted big innings with four runs in the third inning and seven in the fourth en route to 13 runs on 11 hits. Gusties' pitcher Hannah Heacox kept Macalester off the scoreboard, allowing no runs or hits while walking one and striking out seven in five innings.
In Game 2, Gustavus scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning and plated two more runs on a double by Emily Carlson in the third for a 3-0 lead. The Scots recorded their first hit of the day in the bottom of the fourth, as first year
Julia Carpenter (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) led off with a single. She moved to second on a groundout and later scored on a two-out double by junior
Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) to make the score 3-1. Macalester put runners on second and third with two outs in the sixth, but a strikeout ended the threat. The Gusties added a run in the top of the seventh, then retired the Scots in the bottom of the seventh to complete the sweep.
Bean pitched a solid game, allowing four runs, three earned, on 10 hits while walking three and fanning four in seven innings of work. Jena Willis held Macalester to three hits and a run with six strikeouts.
The Scots continue MIAC play with a doubleheader at first-place Saint Benedict on Saturday, Apr. 22. The first game starts at 1:00 p.m. in St. Joseph, Minn.
