TUCSON, Ariz. – The Macalester College baseball team continued play at the Tucson Invitational, splitting a doubleheader with Concordia University of Wisconsin Thursday afternoon at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Scots, who won Game 1 in walk-off fashion, 2-1 before losing the second game, 6-3, are now 7-4 on the season. The Falcons are now 4-5.
In the first game, sophomore
Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) singled home junior
Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson) in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 1-0 lead. Concordia tied the score in the top of the fifth on an RBI triple from Bryan Thomas. The game remained tied heading to the bottom of the seventh, where sophomore
Sam Goldberg (North Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) led off with a single. A bunt by sophomore
Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) moved Goldberg to second, and a grounder from junior
Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) allowed Goldberg to move to third. With two out, junior
Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) stepped up and delivered the game-winning hit, a single to right field that plated Goldberg for the walk-off win.
Solid pitching set the stage for Brantner's heroics, with sophomore
Cole Chang (Pleasantville, N.Y./Collegiate School) starting and giving up just one run on six hits while walking four and striking out three in six innings of work. Senior lefty
Anson Justi (Columbia, Md./McDonogh School) pitched a scoreless inning, allowing only a walk to earn the victory. Brantner, McMullen and Abelson each had two hits.
Goldberg put the Scots ahead early in Game 2, hitting a two-run triple that brought home Low and senior
Quentin Stuart (Nashville, Ind./Nashville) in the top of the second inning. A sacrifice fly from first year
Carl Francalangia (West Hartford, Conn./The Loomis-Chaffee School) plated Goldberg for a 3-0 Macalester lead. The Falcons tied the score with three runs in the bottom of the third, then took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth.
First year
Matthew Plisko (Alpharetta, Ga./Pace Academy 19) allowed six runs, five earned, on nine hits while fanning five in six innings. Baretta paced the offense with two hits.
Macalester plays a single game against Dickinson State on Friday, Mar. 17, beginning at 11:00 a.m. Pacific at the Kino Sports Complex.
