TUCSON, Ariz. – The Macalester College baseball team fell to Salem State University, 16-10 at the Tucson Invitational Wednesday morning Kino Sports Complex. The Scots are now 6-3 on the season, while the Vikings improve to 4-3.
In a rematch of Macalester's 15-10 victory on Monday, the two teams combined for 26 runs and 30 hits. The Scots took a 2-0 lead on a sacrifice fly from junior
Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) and a bases-loaded walk by sophomore
Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont), who was Monday's hero with two homers and a triple. But Salem State answered with six runs in the first inning and two more in the second for a commanding 8-2 advantage.
Macalester came back with five runs in the top of the third on three hits, two walks and two hit-batsmen to make the score 8-7. Senior
Peter Bertel (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest), juniors Brantner,
Ben Castagnetti (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and
Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), and sophomore
Sam Goldberg (North Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) each drove in runs in the inning. The Vikings scored runs in the third and fifth innings, then answered a run-scoring single by Brantner in the top of the sixth with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead 12-8. Baretta singled home Bertel in the seventh, but again Salem State responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh and another run in the eighth. Baretta drove in his third run of the game in the ninth to close out the scoring.
Baretta went 4-for-5 with a run and three RBIs to pace the offense. Brantner also drove in three runs with three hits, while Castagnetti, Bertel and first year
Carl Francalangia (West Hartford, Conn./The Loomis-Chaffee School) registering two hits apiece.
Macalester continued play at the Tucson Invitational with a doubleheader against Concordia of Wisconsin on Thursday, Mar. 16. The games will be played in Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium beginning at 3:00 p.m. Pacific.
