NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team lost to MIAC foe Carleton College on the road, 61-54 Wednesday evening at West Gym. The Scots fall to 9-13 overall and 3-12 in league play. The Knights improve to 8-14, 6-9 MIAC.
Macalester got off to a fast start in the first quarter, as senior guard
Lauren Clamage (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) and first year guard
Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley NW) each hit a pair of three-pointers in a 20-10 run to open the game. The Scots shot 64.3 percent from the field in the first quarter, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, to lead 22-14 after 10 minutes. Macalester held a 28-21 advantage midway through the second quarter before Carleton closed out the period with a 15-4 run to take a 36-32 edge at the break. The Scots did not make a three-pointer in the second quarter, while the Knights shot 57.1 percent overall from the field.
In the third quarter, junior forward
Leah Gray (San Rafael, Calif./Branson School) nearly erased a nine-point deficit on her own, scoring seven consecutive points to make the score 41-39 Carleton with 2:22 on the clock. But the Knights answered by scoring the final six points of the quarter to lead 47-39. In the fourth quarter, an 8-2 Scots run that included threes from Gray and junior guard
Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) made it a four-point game, 53-49 with 2:44 to play. Again Carleton responded, tallying the next eight points to put the game out of reach. Macalester turned the ball over 20 times while shooting 6-of-16 from the free throw line for the game.
Clamage paced the Scots with 14 points, while Gray contributed 12 points and four rebounds. Junior center
Regan Fruh (Helena, Mont./Helena) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go with seven points, and Hull finished with eight points and two steals. Carleton's Samantha Cooke led all players with 20 points.
Macalester returns home to host St. Olaf in a MIAC game on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 1:00 p.m. The Scots will honor their four seniors before the game.
