ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team fell to Carleton College, 80-46 in a MIAC contest Wednesday night in the Leonard Center. The Scots are now 7-14 overall and 3-13 in the conference following the loss, while the Knights improve to 13-8, 10-6 MIAC with their ninth win in a row.
After both teams started slow on offense, Carleton broke the game open midway through the first half with a 22-3 run to lead, 24-7 with 8:17 on the clock. The Knights ended up closing out the first half with a 10-3 spree to take a commanding 44-18 advantage into the halftime break. Kent Hanson was 9-of-11 from the field en route to 19 first-half points, as Carleton shot 56.7 percent from the floor compared to 25.0 percent for Macalester.
Sophomore guard
Michael Gutierrez (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Prep Academy) opened the second half with a three-pointer, but the Scots were unable to gain any momentum. The Knights stayed in control, using a 9-0 run capped by a pair of baskets from Hanson to take their largest lead of the game with one minute remaining. Hanson finished with a game-high 30 points.
Gutierrez tallied 19 points while making all seven of his attempts from the free throw line to lead Macalester. Senior guard
Dylan Kilgour (La Crescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley) added 10 points and five rebounds, with sophomore forward
Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) contributing five steals and three assists.
Macalester hosts St. Olaf College on Saturday, Feb. 11, beginning at 3:00 p.m. The Scots will honor their four seniors before the game.
