ST. PAUL, Minn. – A three-pointer by sophomore guard
Michael Gutierrez (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Prep Academy) with 1.0 second on the clock lifted the Macalester College men's basketball team to a 64-61 victory over St. Olaf College Saturday afternoon in the Leonard Center. The MIAC win gives the Scots an 8-14 record on the season, including a 4-13 mark in league play. The Oles drop to 10-12, 8-9 MIAC.
After a pair of Gutierrez free throws put Macalester ahead, 61-58 with 27 seconds left, Austin Majeskie drained a three for St. Olaf to tie the score with 19 seconds to play. After a timeout, Gutierrez dribbled at the top of the key, started to drive then pulled up for a deep three. His shot was good for his eighth three-pointer of the game, leaving just one second for the Oles. Robert Tobroxen's desperation shot from 70 feet went off the rim, and the Scots earned their fourth conference win of the season.
Macalester trailed for the entire first half but not by more than six points. Two threes from Gutierrez near the end of the half helped the Scots trim the deficit to two, 32-30 at the break. At the start of the second half, Gutierrez and sophomores
Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) and
Carl Salvino (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) hit consecutive three-pointers to give the Scots their first lead of the game, 39-34.
The lead grew to as many as seven points before St. Olaf came back to tie the score at 43-43 with 12:05 to play. There would be five more ties and six lead changes before the end of the game, with neither team leading by more than three points the rest of the way. With the game tied at 53-53, yet another three from Gutierrez put Macalester ahead, 59-56 with under a minute to go. Noah Beck was fouled and made two free throws, then Gutierrez answered with two freebies to restore the three-point advantage, 61-58.
The Scots made 13 threes as a team, shooting 44.8 percent from beyond the arc for the game. Gutierrez finished with 37 points while making 8-of-12 from three-point range and 11-of-17 overall. He also was 7-of-8 from the charity stripe and had two steals. No other Macalester player scored in double figures, with Salvino scoring eight points and Ferm contributing seven points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks. Senior center
Kareem Ismail (Pasadena, Calif./Flintridge Prep) had just two points to go with three blocks before fouling out with 5:30 remaining. Tobroxen and Majeskie each had 13 points for St. Olaf.
Before the game, Macalester honored seniors Ismail,
Jordan Black-Mathews (Dallas, Texas/Covenant Christian),
Zach Gullerud (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley),
Max Horvath and
Dylan Kilgour (La Crescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley).
